China Bans Nike TV Ad
Have you seen the recent Nike ads entitled “Chamber of Fear” that feature animated cartoons of NBA star LeBron James battling Asian martial arts experts, dragons, and other “Oriental” cultural icons? Well apparently the Chinese government has and it’s not impressed. So much so that they have recently banned those ads from Chinese television, describing them as “violat[ing] regulations that mandate that all advertisements in China should uphold national dignity and interest and respect the motherland’s culture.”
Are the Chinese being a little too sensitive or paranoid, as they’re sometimes prone to do? Or has an American company once again misappropriated traditional Asian cultural symbols for the sake of commercialism?
